Causes of and Solutions for Black Shadows on Projector Images | Checking the Projection Surface, Input Signal, and Unit in Order

Where is the black shadow on the projector originating from?
Finding a black shadow during a dark scene in a movie can make you worry that your projector is broken. However, the projected image is a composite not only of the projector itself, but also the video content, connected devices, the wall or screen you are projecting onto, and shadows from objects obstructing the light. Even if black spots look the same, the causes and solutions differ. First, note the position, shape, and size of the spot on the screen, and when it started appearing; if possible, take a photograph. This will be a useful reference when comparing across multiple screens.
The order of verification should be: the projection surface and surrounding objects, the video being played, the connected devices, and finally the projector unit itself. Starting with steps that are quick and safe to perform reduces the risk of misidentifying a healthy unit as faulty, or missing symptoms that suggest you should actually stop using it. If the entire screen is blank, the cause may be different, so please also refer to checking connections when HDMI displays nothing.
Step 1: Check the wall/screen and the projection path
First, look at the wall or screen you are using under bright lighting. Stains, wrinkles, irregularities in wallpaper, or dirt on a screen can often appear as dark areas. If you change the projection surface to a different flat white wall or a properly mounted screen and the black spot moves or disappears, you can suspect the state of the projection surface. However, since the appearance can change based on the wall material or lighting, try to compare under similar brightness conditions.
Next, check if there is anything between the unit and the wall. Corners of furniture, houseplants, hands, or cables can create sharp-edged shadows if they obstruct the light. If the position or shape of the shadow changes significantly when you shift the unit slightly, check the projection path again for obstructions. In small rooms, the edges of the image might overlap with shelves or curtains. For safety, ensure that the unit's vents are not blocked and that the power cord is in a position where it won't be pulled.
Step 2: Isolate the issue using different videos and the menu screen
If the shadow is only present in one movie or video, it might be an intentional effect, a shadow from the filming process, or noise in the file itself. First, try displaying a bright, near-solid-color screen, a different video, and the projector's home screen or settings menu in that order. If the shadow only appears on a specific piece of content, play the original video on a different screen to compare. If it appears in the same spot on a TV or smartphone, the cause is more likely the source material rather than the projector.
Conversely, if there is a black spot in the same location even on the home screen, it cannot be attributed solely to the playback app. Record the position, turn off the power, let the unit cool down completely, and only perform external checks as described in the manual. If multiple black shadows appear, they spread suddenly, or you notice a burning smell, stop the process and cease use immediately.
Step 3: Change the input path, such as HDMI or smartphone
If you are using an external video device or gaming console, first check if the shadow appears on that device's home screen. Afterward, compare the same screen using a different input device or a different cable. If the symptom only occurs when switching to a specific device, it provides a clue that the issue may lie with the output settings, the cable, or the connection. Turn off the device before unplugging cables, and avoid applying excessive force to the terminals.
If you are projecting from a smartphone, check both the phone's own screen and the projected screen. Check if the shadow appears in the photo or video files themselves, and try different content. If the smartphone connection process itself is unstable, you can check the connection method in the smartphone and projector connection guide. If the same shadow remains on the menu screen even after changing connection methods, do not assume the cause is limited to the input side.
Step 4: Safely check the outside of the unit
Turn off the power, unplug the cord, and allow the unit to cool down before checking the lens surface for fingerprints or dust from the outside. Follow the product manual for cleaning instructions; do not use liquids or coarse cloths not specified. Even if you clean the lens, the black shadow may not necessarily disappear. Especially if a clearly defined shadow remains in the same spot, it is safer to keep a record of the symptoms and contact support rather than repeatedly wiping the surface.
If dust has accumulated around the air intake or exhaust vents, check the exterior within the scope of the manual. However, do not touch the unit while it is hot, and do not insert tools into internal optical components or fans. If you notice unusual noises, smells, abnormal overheating, or changes in how the power cuts out, do not attempt to fix it just by adjusting image settings—stop using the unit and contact the retailer or manufacturer.
By Symptom: Where to check next
| Appearance | What to try first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow disappears on a different wall | Check the original wall or screen for dirt/irregularities | Consider improving the projection surface |
| Visible only in one video | Play the same video on a different screen | Check the status of the source material |
| Visible only with external devices | Compare with a different device/cable and the menu screen | Isolate the input path |
| Remains in the same spot on the menu screen | Check the outer lens according to the manual | If it doesn't improve, contact support |
| Accompanied by spreading shadows, smells, or overheating | Stop using and power off | Do not disassemble; contact support |
Information useful to have before contacting support
Keep a note of the model name, date of purchase, when the shadows began to appear, the position and shape of the shadows, whether they appear on the menu screen, and whether they can be reproduced on a different wall or with a different input. Taking photos of both bright and dark screens will make it easier to explain the symptoms. However, do not look directly into the lens or stare at the projection light while taking photos. When moving the product, turn off the power and wait until it has cooled down sufficiently.
If you are using an Aestiquo projector
Even with models like the Q1 or P1, if you find a black shadow, first compare the symptoms on the menu screen versus other video content. Do not disassemble the unit based on your own judgment; tell retailer support your model name and the conditions under which the issue occurs. Note that the ability to project toward the ceiling does not mean the unit can be mounted directly onto a wall or ceiling. Do not attempt to check symptoms by setting up the unit in a way that poses a risk of falling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a black shadow always be fixed by wiping the lens?
No. The cause could be the projection surface, input video, connected devices, or internal components. After turning off the power and letting it cool, check the exterior as instructed in the manual; if it does not improve, do not continue cleaning by force.
Is it a failure if the shadow continues to appear in the same spot on the screen?
If it remains in the same position on the unit's menu screen or with different inputs, there is a possibility that the unit requires an inspection. However, because the cause cannot be determined by the screen alone, please consult support with the results of your tests using different projection surfaces.
Are a black shadow and "No Signal" the same symptom?
No. "No Signal" indicates a state where the input signal is not being received. The verification order is different from cases where shadows appear on part of the image, so you should check your input settings and cables separately.
Is it okay to keep using the projector if the shadow spreads suddenly?
If the sudden change is accompanied by unusual odors or abnormal heat, stop using the unit. Turn off the power, wait for it to cool down, and contact support following the instructions in the manual.
