DVD Player Not Displaying on TV: Causes & Solutions | Complete Guide to HDMI/AV Connection Issues

💡 This article will help you understand: the causes of no video or audio when connecting a DVD player to a TV, organized by connection type (HDMI/AV), and provides steps to resolve these issues in 5 minutes. Also applicable to Aestiquo PD101 and PD141 users.
🔌 First, check | Connection types and basics

There are mainly two ways to connect a DVD player to a TV. Please check your connection method, then refer to the corresponding causes and solutions.

Connection Type Features Compatible Products (e.g.)
HDMI Connection Transmits video and audio with a single cable. High-quality digital connection. PD141 (equipped with HDMI output terminal)
AV Connection (Red, White, Yellow) Analog connection. Compatible with older TVs. PD101・PD141・PD156
Important point: The PD101 only supports AV output. If you require HDMI connection, please consider the PD141.
❌ Cause ①|No picture with HDMI connection

Cause 1: Incorrect TV input selection

This is the most common cause. Even if an HDMI cable is connected, the video will not be displayed unless the TV's input is switched to "HDMI1," "HDMI2," etc.

Resolution steps
  1. Press the "Input Select" or "SOURCE" button on your TV remote.
  2. Select the HDMI port number (HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.) to which the DVD player is connected.
  3. Turn on the DVD player and play a disc.
  4. If no video is displayed, try plugging it into a different HDMI port.

Cause 2: Faulty HDMI cable or poor contact

No video may appear if the cable is broken or if the plug is not firmly inserted.

Resolution steps
  1. Unplug the HDMI cable, then firmly reinsert both ends.
  2. Replace with a different HDMI cable and check operation.
  3. Check for any dirt or bends on the TV-side and DVD player-side terminals.

Cause 3: DVD player does not support HDMI output

Models not equipped with an HDMI terminal, such as the PD101, cannot be connected via an HDMI cable.

Solution: Switch to AV (red, white, yellow) cable connection, or consider the HDMI-compatible PD141.
❌ Cause ②|No picture with AV connection (red, white, yellow)

Cause 1: Cable color does not match terminal color

AV cables are color-coded by function: yellow for video, red for audio (right), and white for audio (left). If the colors are mismatched, no video or audio will be produced.

  1. Connect the yellow plug to the yellow terminal (VIDEO) on the TV and DVD player.
  2. Connect the red and white plugs to their respective colored audio terminals (AUDIO).
  3. Switch the TV input to "AV" or "Video."

Cause 2: TV does not have AV input terminals (newer TVs)

Many recent slim TVs omit AV terminals.

Solution: An "AV to HDMI converter adapter" can be used to connect to TVs with only HDMI terminals. These are available for around 1,000-2,000 yen at electronics stores and on Amazon.

Cause 3: Broken AV cable or poor contact

If the cable is old, the internal wiring may break, causing video or audio to cut out.

  1. Replace the included AV cable with another cable and check operation.
  2. Gently move the connector part and check if the video changes (if it changes, there is a possibility of a broken cable).
🔇 No sound, but video plays

TV volume set to zero or muted Increase volume or unmute with TV remote
DVD player unit volume setting Check/adjust volume on unit or remote
Incorrect AV red and white cable connection Re-plug red and white plugs into correct terminals

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect the PD101 to a TV via HDMI?
The PD101 does not have an HDMI output terminal, so HDMI connection is not possible. Please connect to the TV's AV input terminal using the included AV cable (red, white, yellow). If your TV does not have an AV terminal, please use an "AV to HDMI converter adapter."
What if "No Signal" is displayed after connecting?
It is highly likely that the TV's input selection is not set correctly. Press the "Input Select" or "SOURCE" button on your remote control and select the port (HDMI1, AV1, etc.) to which the DVD player is connected. If this does not resolve the issue, please try replacing the cable.
What if video plays but the colors are off?
Check that the yellow plug (video) of the AV cable is connected to the correct terminal. Also, resetting the TV's video settings (color temperature, saturation) may improve the situation.
What if none of the above solutions work?
There may be a malfunction in the DVD player unit itself or the TV's output terminal. Please try checking operation with another TV, or contact Aestiquo Support. We will provide free service if it is within the warranty period.
