DVD Player Not Displaying on TV: Causes & Solutions | Complete Guide to HDMI/AV Connection Issues
There are mainly two ways to connect a DVD player to a TV. Please check your connection method, then refer to the corresponding causes and solutions.
| Connection Type | Features | Compatible Products (e.g.) |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI Connection | Transmits video and audio with a single cable. High-quality digital connection. | PD141 (equipped with HDMI output terminal) |
| AV Connection (Red, White, Yellow) | Analog connection. Compatible with older TVs. | PD101・PD141・PD156 |
Cause 1: Incorrect TV input selection
This is the most common cause. Even if an HDMI cable is connected, the video will not be displayed unless the TV's input is switched to "HDMI1," "HDMI2," etc.
- Press the "Input Select" or "SOURCE" button on your TV remote.
- Select the HDMI port number (HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.) to which the DVD player is connected.
- Turn on the DVD player and play a disc.
- If no video is displayed, try plugging it into a different HDMI port.
Cause 2: Faulty HDMI cable or poor contact
No video may appear if the cable is broken or if the plug is not firmly inserted.
- Unplug the HDMI cable, then firmly reinsert both ends.
- Replace with a different HDMI cable and check operation.
- Check for any dirt or bends on the TV-side and DVD player-side terminals.
Cause 3: DVD player does not support HDMI output
Models not equipped with an HDMI terminal, such as the PD101, cannot be connected via an HDMI cable.
Cause 1: Cable color does not match terminal color
AV cables are color-coded by function: yellow for video, red for audio (right), and white for audio (left). If the colors are mismatched, no video or audio will be produced.
- Connect the yellow plug to the yellow terminal (VIDEO) on the TV and DVD player.
- Connect the red and white plugs to their respective colored audio terminals (AUDIO).
- Switch the TV input to "AV" or "Video."
Cause 2: TV does not have AV input terminals (newer TVs)
Many recent slim TVs omit AV terminals.
Cause 3: Broken AV cable or poor contact
If the cable is old, the internal wiring may break, causing video or audio to cut out.
- Replace the included AV cable with another cable and check operation.
- Gently move the connector part and check if the video changes (if it changes, there is a possibility of a broken cable).
| Cause | Solution |
|---|---|
| TV volume set to zero or muted | Increase volume or unmute with TV remote |
| DVD player unit volume setting | Check/adjust volume on unit or remote |
| Incorrect AV red and white cable connection | Re-plug red and white plugs into correct terminals |
| Disc audio format not supported | Check operation with another disc |
| Check Item | How to Check | Status |
|---|---|---|
| TV input selection | Switch input to HDMI/AV with remote | □ Checked |
| Cable connection | Firmly reinsert both ends | □ Checked |
| Cable color matching (AV) | Yellow, red, white to corresponding terminals | □ Checked |
